If there is water or sewage coming up somewhere it should not be, start at step one below and call while you work through it. Someone answers 24/7, including right now.
The next few minutes are about limiting how much worse it gets, not about working out what is wrong. Diagnosis can wait until there is a camera in the line and daylight outside.
The first ten minutes, in order

Stop water going into the line
Nothing down any drain until the line is clear — and that means telling everyone else in the house, not just yourself. A dishwasher or a washing machine part way through a cycle will empty into the same pipe on its own timer, so stop those at the machine. Every litre that goes in has to come out somewhere, and right now it is coming out at the lowest opening in your basement.

Deal with electricity before anything else
If water is anywhere near an outlet, a furnace, a hot water tank or a wired appliance, shut that circuit off at the panel before you go into the room. If the water has reached the panel itself, do not touch it and do not go in — that is a call to an electrician or the utility, not something to work around. This is the part of a flooded basement that actually hurts people.

If it is clean water, shut the water off
A burst supply line keeps supplying. The main shutoff is usually where the water enters the building, often near the meter. Turn it clockwise, gently. If the valve will not move, leave it — forcing a seized shutoff turns one problem into two — and tell us when you call.

Keep people and pets out of it
Sewage is a health matter, not just a mess. Shut the door, keep children and animals out of the room, and if you have to go in, wear boots and gloves and keep it off skin. Nothing in there is worth going in barefoot for.

Sixty seconds of video before you clean up
Before anything gets moved or mopped, walk the room once with your phone recording — where the water came out, how far it reached, what is sitting in it. It takes a minute and you cannot go back for it later. Then move what can be lifted clear.

Call, and lead with these four things
What came out — clean water or sewage. Where it is coming out. Whether it is still coming. And roughly how old the house is. Those four answers decide what gets loaded before anyone leaves the yard, which is why we ask for them first instead of asking for your address first.
What not to do
Scan this. Do not study it.
- Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into a line that is already backed up. It will not reach the blockage, it sits in the standing water, and the person who opens that line afterwards is standing over it.
- Do not run a machine "to see if it has cleared". The dishwasher, the washer and a long shower are all tests that make the mess bigger if the answer is no.
- Do not keep flushing. A toilet that is backing up will keep backing up, and each attempt adds to what is already on the floor.
- Do not pull a cleanout cap on a line that is full. There is head pressure behind it, and what is behind it comes out at your feet rather than politely draining away.
- Do not use a household shop vacuum on sewage unless it is actually rated for it.
- Do not redirect a sump pump into the sanitary line to buy time. It is the wrong pipe and it is the reason some basements flood in the first place.
- Do not throw anything out that you might want a record of yet. Photograph it where it lies first.
What comes off the truck
- A cable machine, for getting flow back in a blocked line — which is always the first job, before anything is diagnosed.
- A high-pressure jetter, for the lines where a cable clears a path and leaves the pipe wall coated.
- A push camera, so that where looking down the line is warranted it happens on this visit rather than on a second one.
- Cleanout and access tooling, including for the houses where there is no accessible cleanout and the line has to be reached another way.
- Containment and protective gear, because the first hour of a sewage backup is a health job before it is a plumbing one.
- Enough light to work in a basement with the power off at the panel.
What happens at the door

Flow first, questions second
The first objective is getting the line moving again. Nothing is diagnosed, nothing is measured and nothing is quoted while there is standing sewage on a floor. That order is not negotiable and it is not a sales sequence.

Then we look, if looking is warranted
Once it is draining, the camera goes down — on a line that has done this before, or where what came out of it suggests the pipe rather than the contents. On a first blockage in a newer line, sometimes the honest answer is that there is nothing to look at.

You watch the screen
Whatever the camera finds, you see it live and you keep the footage. A written condition report follows. You should be able to look at the same picture we are looking at and argue with our reading of it.

Nothing gets sold at 2am
If the line needs work beyond clearing it, that conversation happens in daylight with the footage in front of you and no water on the floor. A repair decision made by an exhausted person at three in the morning is a decision made badly, and we would rather have it made properly next week.
When this is not an emergency
Plenty of what gets called in at midnight is a morning job, and we will say so on the phone rather than charge you to hear it in person. A drain that is slow but still draining will still be slow at eight and it will cost less then. One fixture backing up while every other drain in the house runs normally is that fixture's own branch, not the main line — it is not going to flood anything overnight. A gurgle, a smell, or a toilet that is sluggish once and then fine are all worth looking at, and none of them is worth looking at tonight. The genuine emergencies are short and specific: sewage coming out into the building, clean water running that cannot be shut off, every drain in the house backed up at once, or water near anything electrical. If what you have is not on that list, get some sleep and call in the morning.
What searching for someone nearby actually buys you
Typing "emergency plumbing near me" into a phone at two in the morning is a reasonable thing to do, and it buys less than it looks like it should. Distance is not what decides how tonight goes. What decides it is whether a person picks up the phone, and whether whatever arrives can both clear the line and look down it afterwards — because a truck that can only do the first half of that leaves you with a drain that runs and no idea why it stopped.
So: a person answers, 24 hours, and it is a person rather than a service that takes a message and forwards it. What you will not get from us is a number of minutes. This company was founded in 2026 and has no dispatch history to quote from, and a figure invented to win a phone call is worth nothing at all standing at your door. What you get instead is a straight answer about whether we can be there tonight, and if a crew is already committed somewhere else, we will tell you that outright rather than take the job and let you sit up waiting for it. You can be phoning someone else four minutes later instead of four hours later.
The other thing worth saying plainly before you call: this is a sewer and drain company. Blocked and backed-up lines, water lines that have failed underground, and the camera work and trenchless repairs that follow from both — that is the whole of it. If what has gone wrong is a hot water tank, a gas appliance or a fixture inside the house, that is a different trade and a different licence, and we will tell you so on the phone instead of driving out to tell you the same thing an hour later.
